World of Color Dessert Party: Was It Worth It?

The World of Color Dessert Party can be a great option if you want guaranteed viewing and seating during the show, but it isn’t necessary for every family. This guide breaks down what you actually get, who it’s best for, and how to decide if it’s worth the cost for your trip.

The World of Color dessert party is often positioned as a low-stress way to see one of Disneyland’s most popular nighttime shows. With reserved seating and included treats, it sounds like an easy upgrade — especially for a special occasion.

We chose to do the World of Color dessert party on New Year’s Eve as a one-time treat, knowing it would be a very busy night. This post walks through what the experience was actually like, what we enjoyed, and why — even though we love World of Color — it’s not something we’d personally repeat.

Quick answer (TL;DR)

The World of Color dessert party can be worth it if sitting during the show and having a reserved spot feels essential, especially on a high-crowd night. For us, the waiting, partial view from behind the standing section, and average food made it less appealing than other viewing options. We prefer joining the virtual queue, which gives us more flexibility and a smoother evening overall.

Important planning note: you must be in Disney California Adventure

This is a small but important detail: the World of Color dessert party takes place inside Disney California Adventure, so you’ll need to plan your park day accordingly.

If you’re splitting time between parks or hopping later in the day, this is something to factor in early. It works best on a night when you’re already planning to end your evening in DCA rather than trying to rush over at the last minute as the entrance can get backed up just before the show.

What the dessert party includes

At the dessert party, we were given a plate with:

  • cheese
  • fruit
  • a few small desserts

Drinks included hot cocoa, a mocktail, and water. I think cocktails were available, but we don’t drink alcohol. The food was fine, but nothing stood out as particularly memorable. We have photos from the experience, and visually it was nice, but taste-wise, it didn’t feel like a highlight of the night.

After checking in, we were taken to reserved seating behind the standing viewing area for World of Color. The biggest perk here is being able to sit during the show, which is a real advantage if standing for long periods is difficult or if it’s been a long park day.

The waiting and check-In experience

One downside for us was the waiting beforehand. We spent a fair amount of time in line, and it wasn’t completely clear where we were supposed to line up at first. On a very busy night like New Year’s Eve, that added a bit of unnecessary stress.

This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it’s worth knowing that “reserved” doesn’t mean instant or seamless. There is still waiting involved, and for us, there was some uncertainty about where to go.

Viewing experience: sitting vs visibility

Being able to sit was nice, especially late in the evening. However, because the reserved seating area was behind the standing section, the view wasn’t totally clear.

People in the standing area had kids on their shoulders so the kids could see, which is totally understandable, but that made it harder to see portions of the show from our seats. While we could still enjoy World of Color, it didn’t feel like the best possible view; it was just a more comfortable one.

This is an important tradeoff: comfort versus visibility.

Why we wouldn’t do it again (even though we love World of Color)

We genuinely love World of Color. It’s one of our favorite Disneyland experiences, and we almost always make time for it when we’re in the parks.

That said, for us, the dessert party isn’t the best way to experience it.

We prefer joining the virtual queue. It involves less waiting overall, gives us more flexibility in the evening, and lets us do things like sneaking onto The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure when it’s nearly empty before the show.

We also enjoyed the food at the dessert party less than other treats we look forward to like seasonal treats at Holly Jolly Bakery. For the price, the food simply didn’t add enough value for us to want to repeat the experience.

Who the World of Color Dessert Party is best for

The dessert party tends to work best for:

  • guests who really want to sit during the show
  • families where standing for long periods is difficult
  • special occasions where the overall experience needs to feel special
  • very busy nights when crowd stress is a major concern

It may not be worth it for:

  • families who value flexibility in the evening
  • guests comfortable with virtual queue viewing
  • people who prioritize the best possible sightlines
  • trips where snacks and desserts are a highlight elsewhere

Final Takeaway

The World of Color dessert party isn’t about getting the best view. The decision is really about whether reserved seating and being able to sit during the show are worth the added cost and waiting. We’re glad we tried it as a special New Year’s Eve experience, but for us, the virtual queue fits our rhythm better and makes the evening feel easier and more enjoyable overall.
